SUMMARY:The arms industry in the era of COVID-19: lessons for the future we
 binar
DESCRIPTION:Soon after the COVID-19 pandemic reached the UK\, it became cle
ar that the NHS was not sufficiently equipped or staffed to respond to the
crisis.\n\nIn March\, the government put out a call for industry to conve
rt its production to manufacture crucial medical equipment\, such as venti
lators and PPE for frontline workers. To date\, a number of arms and defen
ce companies have responded to this call – alongside existing companies
that manufacture medical equipment and others.\n\nWorkers at Lucas Aerospa
ce called for exactly this kind of arms conversion back in 1976\, when th
ey produced an Alternative Corporate Plan – now known as the Lucas Plan.
\n\nJoin Medact on this webinar to discuss what a ‘just transition’ fr
om industries that cause destruction to those that support peace and publi
c health could and should look like.\n\nYou will hear from experts in the
field of arms conversion and a just transition for workers:\n\n Hilary Wa
inwright – Founding editor of Red Pepper Magazine and co-author of ‘Th
e Lucas Plan: A New Trade Unionism in the Making?’  \n Dr. Andy Haines
  – Professor of Environmental Change and Public Health at LSHTM\n Phil
Asquith – Chartered Engineer and former Chairman of the Lucas Aerospace
Combine\, Burnley site\n Dr. Stuart Parkinson – Executive Director of
Scientists for Global Responsibility\n Sam Mason – Policy officer at
PCS Union and member of the New Lucas Plan project\n\nYou need to register
  for the webinar here.\n\n&nbsp\;
