SUMMARY:War\, peace and accountability in Yemen
DESCRIPTION:CAAT is delighted to welcome to the UK Mr. Abdulrasheed Al Faki
h\, Executive Director of Mwatana for Human Rights.\n\nMwatana works to in
vestigate\, document\, and expose human rights and international humanitar
ian law violations by all parties to the conflict in Yemen. They have stro
ngly supported the campaign by CAAT and other organisations around the wor
ld campaigning against arms sales to the Saudi-led coalition bombing Yemen
\, and were jointly nominated along with CAAT for the 2021 Nobel Peace Pri
ze.\n\nWhile in the UK\, Rasheed will be meeting with MPs and civil societ
y groups\, and will be joining us at the Frontline Club for this event to
discuss the current situation in Yemen.\n\nThe recent truce in Yemen has c
reated a rare moment of hope in the 8-year long war in Yemen\, with a halt
to air strikes\, only occasional violations on the ground\, and an easing
of the devastating Saudi blockade. Yet the country remains in the depths
of a humanitarian catastrophe made even worse by the effects of the war in
Ukraine\, and the ceasefire remains fragile\, with little sign yet of it
turning into lasting peace. All sides to the conflict continue to abuse hu
man rights\, while western powers including the UK continue to pour arms i
nto the situation\, to Saudi Arabia and UAE.\n\nSpeaking alongside Rasheed
will be:\n\nDr. Valentina Azarova of Manchester International Law Center\
, an international law practitioner and academic\, who has written on the
legality of arms transfers in relation to the war in Yemen.\n\nDr. Samuel
 Perlo-Freeman\, Research Coordinator\, Campaign Against Arms Trade.\n\nSar
ah Al-areqi\, Researcher – Iraq and Yemen\, Cairo Institute for Human Ri
 ghts Studies (CIHRS)\n\nKatie Fallon\, Parliamentary Coordinator\, Campaig
n Against Arms Trade (moderator)\n\nThe event will be hybrid in-person and
online. When registering\, please be sure to select the appropriate ticke
t type\, for in-person or online attendance\, as there is only limited cap
acity at the venue.\n\nA Zoom webinar link will be sent out nearer the tim
e for online participants.\n\nRegister here to attend.
